2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review - 2005 Grand Cherokee MSRP ...
Jeep engineers have come up with a larger, edgier and more macho SUV with an engine that's among the most powerful in the segment. This is after years of being afflicted with old, weak engines and saddled with a small cargo compartment. Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in two models, Laredo and Limited.
2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee HEMI - The Car Connection
The Wagoneer's modern descendant is the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a mid-size SUV that, like its forbear, continues to offer the same appealing combination of rugged off-road capability and luxury cruiser comfort. Drop the pedal and you can make 60 mph in just under seven seconds - good performance for a modern V-6 sport sedan, absolutely superb performance for a two-ton 4x4 SUV. And with such overkill power available, the part-throttle performance of the HEMI-equipped Grand Cherokee is better than pedal-to-the-metal in some competitor models. The now-standard five-speed automatic enhances the athletic feel of the Grand Cherokee, keeping the engine humming right in the sweet spot of its powerband without the big rev drops between gear changes you'd get in a wider-ratio four-speed automatic. A nice touch is the HEMI's new variable displacement system, which shuts down some of the engine's cylinders under light load conditions. It helps soften the fuel economy penalty you'd otherwise be paying to own such a burly big-inch engine. The EPA rates the HEMI-equipped Grand Cherokee as being capable of returning mileage of 14 mpg in city driving, 19 on the open road. That isn't on par with a Prius but it doesn't suck, either.

While the SUV craze largely passed Jeep by, the Grand Cherokee enjoyed its loyal following. Thus designing the 3rd generation became a daunting task. While buyers wanting more size, luxury, or seating moved on, the faithful wanted their Jeep to remain as it was. All new from the ground up, the new Grand Cherokee hasn't changed noticeably in any interior dimension, but the new platform is about 5 in longer and the track almost 3 in wider. In Laredo and Limited trim levels, the Grand Cherokee offers a 210hp V6, a 230hp V8, and an optional 325hp HEMI (R) V8. An all new 5-speed automatic is the only available transmission. Three 4WD systems are offered as well as a 2WD model. Other mechanical highlights include rack-and-pinion steering and an independent front suspension.

The Grand Cherokee always has been a star performer off-road, but the new, third-generation version attempts to elevate its game on pavement. To improve ride and handling, Jeep finally switches to an independent front suspension (of unequal-length control arms) and rack-and-pinion steering. Uplevel models feature antiroll bars that are disabled when steering straight ahead. All Grand Cherokees get a wider track and a tighter turning circle, and stability control is newly available. There are two new engines under the squared-off hood.

Jeep practically invented the "crossover" SUV when the Grand Cherokee debuted more than a decade ago, though nobody called it that back then. The Grand Cherokee's comfy interior and tolerably calm ride brought carlike civility to a rugged SUV, when most utilities felt like the clattering pickup trucks they were based on. Jeep, however, is crossing back. Instead of following the trend toward slim and sexy, the new Grand Cherokee is boxier than the last version. Jeep rejected the idea of relying on Subaru-like all-wheel drive, suitable for snow and light off-roading; those who choose the option get full-blown four-wheel drive, which is more rugged. The Grand Cherokee, in fact, comes with an external badge that declares the SUV to be "trail rated," Jeep's way of saying, "This ain't no sissy crossover.

The front of the new Grand Cherokee exudes added individuality with the strikingly styled Startech front apron. Its counterpart in the rear is a custom Startech rear apron with two cutouts for the characteristic oval-shaped chrome tailpipes of the Startech sport exhaust system. The fully stainless steel exhaust system is available for all engine variants of the Grand Cherokee. It optimizes power yield and produces a more powerful engine sound.

With its upright and substantial posture, the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee's new design offers an athletic and contemporary appearance. The new exterior design has a higher belt line and a reduced glass-to-body proportion. Signature features of the vehicle remain, such as the seven-slot grille which boldly dominates the front view. "The Grand Cherokee driver expects a high level of comfort and refinement and also wants to know the legendary Jeep capability and core values are still there when they need them," said Mark Allen, Design Manager and the 2005 Grand Cherokee's exterior designer. "Quality isn't just the workings of the interior but the perception the customer feels when he or she is in the vehicle," said Clyde Ney, Design Manager and the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee's interior designer.

The braking system of the all-new 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee includes Brembo four-piston calipers clamping 360 x 32 mm vented rotors in front, and 350 x 26 mm rotors in the rear. A new front fascia reduces lift and drag, and incorporates ducts to direct air to cool the brakes. Side sill extensions create downforce, while a new rear fascia features an aggressive center cutout for 4-inch dual exhaust tips. "A successful effort was made to limit the amount of joints and pieces in the interior," said Clyde Ney, Chrysler Group Jeep Design Manager and the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee's interior designer. "Quality isn't just the workings of the interior but the perception the customer feels when they are within the vehicle. The 2005 Grand Cherokee rear suspension builds on the success of previous generation Jeep multi-link systems. Four tubular control arms combine with a tubular track bar for total rear-axle control.

What long-time aficionados will instantly notice is the change to the classic seven-slot Jeep grille. Where the old slots were fanned out, the new ones are vertical, marching across the front of the Grand Cherokee like a precision drill team. On the plus side, Grand Cherokee pays fairly strict attention to safety features. For the first time, the vehicle gets an electronic stability program, which keeps the vehicle from fishtailing on slick surfaces. The system is standard on the Limited and a $500 option on Laredo. Both models come with standard antilock brakes. Expect to pay $490 extra for side curtain air bags.
