New on all 1998 Grand Cherokees are Wrangler HP VSB tires, new ignition key lock for added security and new Dark Saddle and Agate interior colors. Also available for 1998 is the more sporty looking Grand Cherokee TSi package which was introduced mid-year in 1997.

WREG-TV Memphis - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
If the Grand Cherokee has a handicap it is lack of interior space when compared its competition. While the interior is nicely done, the truck is built on a narrow Jeep platform and that dictates and governs how much space is available for shoulders, hips, heads and legs, and, behind the second seat, how much space awaits the cargo loads a truck like this will encounter. The Grand Cherokee still uses recirculating-ball steering, and it is a bit mushy and imprecise compared to other systems. It works with a leading-arm coil-spring front suspension and trailing arm coil-spring rear suspension with gas shocks all around to keep the Grand Cherokee on the straight and narrow. Ride quality is very good, all things considered, and ride control is taut, with not too much body roll in fast corners. When going off road the Grand Cherokee is one of the most capable with a suspension that offers plenty of articulation for climbing over rocks. Its closest competitor in this regard is the Land Rover Discovery.

Jeep Cherokee: Now considered a separate model rather than an option package, the Cherokee Limited got fancier this season. Special features included a chrome grille and headlight surrounds, and a chrome rear license-plate brow. The 6-cylinder engine was revised for quieter running and reduced exhaust emissions, while the automatic transmission was modified to yield smoother shifts. New standard features included brighter headlights (also said to be longer-lasting), a cassette player, and rear child-seat anchors. Newly styled 16-inch wheels went on the Classic and Limited. A Cherokee really shows its age in interior accommodations. Less roomy than a Grand Cherokee or a Ford Explorer, it does carry four adults in comfort. However, the low-roof passenger compartment has no surplus of front shoulder room, a shortage of rear knee clearance, and fairly lofty step-in. Convenient 4-wheel-drive systems, commendable off-road capability, and civilized on road manners-for less than a Grand Cherokee or an Explorer-make the Cherokee an above average value. Despite an aging design and strong competition, Cherokees sold well in the late '90s and are not too expensive today unless you go for a fully equipped model.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee -- by Christopher Keane, Motor Matters
Outside, the new Grand Cherokee is still unmistakably a Jeep - but smoother and sleeker. The classic toothy grille, trapezoid wheel arches and low body lines have been combined with a more modern wedge-shaped silhouette. Corners have been rounded. Over rutted desert trails, the Grand Cherokee gave a firm but comfortable ride. The new Quadra-Drive on-demand four-wheel drive provided effortless traction control. It crept over boulders and ravines with ease. Jeep's new 4WD system combines Quadra-Trac with Vari- lok differentials for a speed-sensitive torque-transfer system. One of the choicest bits to be carried over from the 1998 model is base pricing. Although legends usually command top dollar, pricing for the Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD remains the same at $34,415.
