Jeep Grand Cherokee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Grand Cherokee was a spinoff of the notably smaller Jeep Cherokee. Based on the Jeep Concept 1 (1989), the Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors engineers were designing an XJ Cherokee successor. Specialty models included the Orvis (1995-1997), a Grand Cherokee Limited that featured a questionable color scheme of green paint with red and gold accents and a two-tone green and champagne interior with red accents.

Touring Baja in a MUY Grand - The Car Connection
As a tried-and-true 4x4 enthusiast that basks in the back-country skill of nudging the throttle of rugged rigs to deliver speeds close to a crawl, the Jeep Grand Cherokee's speedy V-8 seemed out of place.

The first year that the Grand Cherokee was introduced it could be had with either a 5 speed manual transmission or with an overdrive automatic. The 5 speed sold poorly and was a rarely purchased item so from 94 on there was only an automatic available. The front axles under the Grand Cherokee have always been the Dana 30 that is found under so many other Jeep vehicles. In the rear two axles were available, the Dana 35 and the Dana 44. The ZJ Grand Cherokee was a well received and capable 4x4 that sold very well for the six years it was in production. There were two basic packages available either the base Laredo model or the Limited model with special editions thrown in from time to time.

From the left front seat, the Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited is easy to figure out and easy to deal with. The instrument panel seems to be running out of space to put the various switches and controls for all the power options. While most Grand Cherokees sold are Laredo and Limited 6-cylinder models, there is still room in the market for the ultimate Jeep. And that's where the 5.9 Limited comes in. Starting at $38,175, it's a candidate for upscale families and Jeep offers a popular two-year lease program.
What's Available
As the Grand Cherokee matured, Chrysler continued to add new features and models. A 2-wheel drive version was added during the '93 model year, the Base model became known as the SE in '94, and an Orvis designer package arrived for 1995 (dropped in '98). The Laredo became the entry model in 1996, and the SE was dropped. For 1997 the lineup saw the addition of the TSi, slotted just below the Limited. For a SUV, the Grand Cherokee is remarkably nimble. In fact, it was the first SUV that drove like a pretty good sedan. Stepping out of a Grand Cherokee and into the previous "car-like" champ of SUVs, the Ford Explorer, was a revelation. As for the ride, again the Grand Cherokee was the benchmark. Smooth and compliant over bumps, it was difficult to upset. The Explorer had a good ride too, but what tipped the scale in favor of the Jeep is its rigid body.
