Popular Mechanics - Jeep Grand Cherokee
Over half a century later, Jeep added the latest chapter to both books when it introduced a totally new, restyled, re-engineered and revamped 1999 Grand Cherokee. A mere 127 parts carried over from the previous model.
1998-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee technical details
Safety aside, Grand Cherokee is luxury for the family on the go. If you purchase a Grand Cherokee, you might as well get the gizmos - and most people do get at least some of the extras, making the Grand Cherokee generally more expensive than its lowest MSRP. That's how Liz Collagiovanni, stage manager for the current production at The Newport Playhouse, ended up with her 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Liz had been injured in an automobile accident. She used $17,000 from a settlement to purchase the then three year old Grand Cherokee, on the advice of her family. Liz says that the Grand Cherokee handles differently than her previous car- a bit stiffer suspension and a little bit bigger- and takes some getting used to, but that it's well worth it. Her Grand Cherokee looks nice, handles well and gets decent highway gas mileage, though it doesn't do so well in the city. The 1999 Grand Cherokee has a new three-link rear suspension with lower unsprung weight and a higher roll center, and a revised front suspension and steering gear. The new tubular front and rear control arms are hydro-formed, making them five times stiffer than the previous design.

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited - Forbes.com
The first-generation Grand Cherokee, introduced as a 1993 model, was near the top of the mountain in terms of luxury and prestige. But, that was before the likes of upscale auto makers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Infiniti and Acura drove onto the "off road" market. Four-wheel-drive towing capability ranges from 3,500 pounds with the V-6 to a hearty 7,200 pounds with the Hemi V-8. Three different all-wheel-drive offerings are available. For those who don't need the extra traction, Jeep also offers two-wheel-drive editions of both its Laredo and Limited models. Given today's rebates, financing and juggling of model features, it's hard to make perfect comparisons. But, the entry price for the base-Laredo 2WD is only $650 higher than that of the 2004, which sold for $26,230. In fact, today's stickers aren't substantially higher than they were in the mid-1990s for a first-generation Grand Cherokee.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 - Automobile Magazine
The quickest, most powerful Jeep ever made is the first SRT model to feature full-time all-wheel drive. And SRT engineers did not simply carry over the system directly from a stock Grand Cherokee. Instead, a great amount of effort went into creating a lighter, stronger system.

Why the veil of secrecy? With so many SUVs in today's market, competition is at an all-time high. The Grand was in desperate need of not just a little freshening, but a complete redo. Competing SUVs from nearly every other automaker in the world have surpassed the current WJ in build quality, ride quality and features. When Daimler took over ownership of the Chrysler brands they took a look at the Grand Cherokee and were a little puzzled. Coming from the Mercedes camp meant that the Daimler execs were well aware of what luxury meant and what brand recognition meant. They looked at the grille, for example, and asked why the WJ had splayed slots instead of straight slots like the Wrangler and even the then-new Liberty. But it was more than just the grille they were nit-picking. They wanted the Jeep line to be more cohesive all-around. They wanted to not only identify a Jeep by the grille alone, but also by other lines, curves and design cues. But the WJ had seen its time and didn't need any more changes or development dollars thrown at it.
SUV: Jeep launches new Grand Cherokee
For on and off-road traction and control, the latest Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive system uses electronic limited slip differentials and has the ability to keep Grand Cherokee going even if only one front wheel has grip, on and off tarmac. "But the real story is on the road independent front suspension, a great Mercedes-Benz diesel engine or a HEMI petrol engine, a sequential gearbox and new safety systems like ESP all help to make the Grand Cherokee as much fun on road as off.
2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 - The Car Connection
Actually, that IS right. The 400-hp Range Rover SC is an astonishingly fast and agile vehicle for its size and weight but with active roll-bars, air suspension and a $70,000 price tag that's not so surprising. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, however, stomps even the blown Range Rover in terms of performance and it's little more than half the price of the Range Rover. You'd better be sitting down for this. The only transmission available is a five-speed Autostick unit that is reasonably responsive when left to its own devices but considerably more entertaining when used as a manual. The shifts are quicker than you usually find in the Grand Cherokee but the odd left-right motion of the gearlever's manual shifts is (as it is in all Chrysler products) very counterintuitive and the display telling you which gear you're in is no bigger than the odometer digits, so it's about as useful as a second set of earlobes. The addition of steering wheel-mounted paddles and a bigger gear display would take a lot of the guesswork out of using the transmission but even if you do happen to miss a down-change as you enter a corner, it's never really a disaster. The work that Jeep has done on the suspension is just remarkable because it combines the sporty firmness you need to feed the SRT8 through corners with a reasonably compliant ride that is more than acceptable for daily commutes and family use.
