Truck Engineering in Detroit - the Commander is not a mere cosmetic rebadging job, but a fully retuned, reconfigured vehicle. It's said that the benchmark for the Commander was the new Land Rover LR3 - and that the Commander beats the LR3 in every benchmark, in some cases by a large margin, with greater reliability and much lower cost. What's more, it is produced on the same assembly line, so production can be kept in line with demand for both the Commander and Grand Cherokee. Jeep Commander car reveiws One area where the Commander is clearly different from the Grand Cherokee is in the glass; it is set up more like the old Cherokee, except pushed even further away from the front passengers. The storage area is decently sized, and the middle row of seats can fold forward for more space. This is not a particularly large vehicle, despite its appearance, and minivans will swallow up more people and cargo, but the Commander does have more than enough room for most purposes, and, since the middle seat was moved forward, it does haul more than a Grand Cherokee.

Although Jeep got plenty of attention for the Rescue concept vehicle that debuted in Detroit earlier this year, no one figured anything like it would ever see a showroom floor. Recent spy photos suggest otherwise, however, as the prototypes bear the same kind of boxy, over the top styling as the concept. Built on the same platform as the new Grand Cherokee, the Commander will be slightly larger and incorporate a third row of seats.

Commander is larger, with a more upright windshield and single-headlight setup, and an extended rear overhang for third-row seating. Commander does share the traditional Jeep seven-slot grille and the Cherokee's powertrain lineup, including a standard V6 and two optional V8s. Why does the Jeep Commander exist? Does the world really need another SUV that approaches 5000 pounds? According to Jeep boss Jeff Bell, the answer is yes, and his reasoning is pretty simple: Jeep, legendary maker of all things SUV, didn't have a seven-passenger vehicle in its line. So? Both the Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass debut at next month's Frankfurt motor show. Each is a thinly veiled concept car ripe for market. They carry distinct Jeep sensibilities with differing targets. Patriot looks like a scaled-down Commander. Expect to see "Trail Rated" badges on the production model's flanks.

Jeep designers predict that drivers will feel in command on the road, aswell as off the beaten path. The sills of the silver-bodied Commander are approximately two inches lower than a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, the suspension can raise up four inches for off-road adventures, similar to last year's Jeepster concept. "Jeep engineers believe the Commander is the world's only four-wheel-drive vehicle that runs on electric power. The Commander borrows two EPIC minivan electric motors, one for each axle, that provide full-time, four-wheel-drive. One of the ways Jeep designers helped compensate for the extra weight and cost of the on-board fuel refinery (as they nicknamed the powertrain) was to design the body with injection molded plastic. The concept was built in carbon fiber to simulate the weight savings that could be achieved with injection molded plastic.

Big, bold, and endowed with plenty of power from a massive motor, the original 1963 Jeep Wagoneer had tons of space for nearly everything - including the kitchen sink. Today, in the spirit of that gargantuan SUV, comes the all-new 2006 Jeep Commander, the first Jeep equipped with three rows of seats. The Commander's sharp-cornered design only hints at the solid capabilities and modern features contained in this hulking Jeep. Naturally, with the name Jeep emblazoned on the hood, the Commander is Trail Rated, which means that it meets the same minimum off-roading capabilities as any other Jeep equipped with four-wheel drive.

Jeep Commander Article & Review Directory
In developing the 2006 Jeep Commander, designers looked to past Jeep vehicles for inspiration: the Willys Station Wagons (1946 to 1962), the Jeep Wagoneer (1963 to 1991) and especially the Jeep Cherokee (1984 to 2001). All were classically Jeep in appearance, with sharp lines, planar surfaces and rugged looks. The Jeep Commander's upright windshield, backlite and rear end, as well as its more vertical body sides and side glass, embody the vehicle's classic Jeep styling. Even the side-view mirrors are blocky and stout. "The Jeep Cherokee is an authentic, classic shape that is rooted in the public consciousness," said Donald A. Renkert, Senior Manager, Jeep Studio, Chrysler Group Product Design Office. "By reinterpreting that vehicle, and other classic Jeep vehicles of the past, the Jeep Commander elicited nods of recognition from consumers, even though it is a brand new vehicle.

It looks like the Jeep Cherokee went on an eating binge. Holy cow! What's with the double fender flares? And why bring back the squar-ish headlights after finally elimating them from the rest of the lineup? Doesn't anyone remember the Glory days of Jeep? Back when AMC was still arround and producing the beloved Jeep? This new rig is a clash of the new and old. Everyone else jumped on the "retro" styling band wagon, why should Jeep be different. The inside of this rig is par for the course with the newest, latest and greatest Jeep has to offer. For all those who carelessly and liberally trashed the Commander's design, it's a safe bet that you've: (1) never owned a Jeep product; (2) will never own a Jeep product; and, (3) were not the target audience for the classic "heritage" style of the Commander's design. The DCX designers hit a home run on this one, and it's aimed at repeat Jeep buyers -not pinheads evaluating CARS based on good positioning of climate controls, a nice toddler seat fastening strap, and a quiet smooth ride. So, stay safe in your Volvos and the "quality" you're so happy with in your vanilla-flavored every-man's buzzy Toyoticas, because when it comes to going beyond the pavement with 7-passengers, you wannabes better have a tow strap ready.

According to Mike Accaviti, Chrysler's VP of marketing, the Commander's tall, boxy outline is actually a nod to its Jeep Wagoneer heritage. There's a lot of brand loyalty in Jeep's following, and it is hoped that the Commander will re-kindle a nearly-thirty-year love affair Wagoneer fans had from 1963-1991 with the boxy trademark vehicle. Like its ancestor, the new Jeep is square and rugged with a scale-anything attitude. But its most significant feature is that it offers seven-passenger seating, a feature lacking in the Grand Cherokee - and one... Don't get the idea that Jeep has gone for the "plus size" SUV market that seems to be imploding. This new Jeep is only about 2 inches longer than the Grand Cherokee and a few inches higher to make room for a stepped roof that helps allow for the third row. Why does the Jeep Commander exist? Does the world really need another SUV that approaches 5000 pounds? According to Jeep boss Jeff Bell, the answer is yes, and his reasoning is pretty simple: Jeep, legendary maker of all things SUV, didnt have a seven-passenger vehicle in its line. So?
