Feature Article - It’s An American Brand: Jeep Concepts Revealed ...
The official wraps were removed from two Jeep concept vehicles at the 61st International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt this past September, the Jeep Patriot and the Jeep Compass, both of which are described as being directionally where the brand is headed as it works to expand its portfolio beyond the four vehicles that presently make up its showroom (Commander, Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Wrangler). A better way of thinking about thisone that is closer to what will undoubtedly occur sometime in 06is that the Patriot and the Compass will be rolling out of the Belvidere Assembly Plant (located in northern Illinois; the heretofore home of the Neon), which is undergoing a $419-million refurbishment, ostensibly in preparation for the Dodge Caliber. Does anyone actually think that a company that is dedicated to building flexibility into its assembly plants is going to make just one vehicle in a given plant?

ROCKCRAWLER.com - Jeep Shows Compass Concept at Detroit Auto Show
DETROIT, Jan. 7, 2002 -The Jeep Compass, in its world premiere at the 2002 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is a concept that feels at home in an urban environment while possessing the free spirit of a performance rally car. Inspired by the 1998 Jeep Jeepster concept and built on a Jeep Cherokee platform, Compass also offers a great combination of on-road dynamics and off-highway capability. Chrysler Group's Pacifica Advanced Design Center in Carlsbad, California, was tasked to design a Jeep concept for "millennials," the next large, emerging group of consumers in the USA, now age 24 or younger. This group will outnumber the "Baby Boomer" generation. Four bucket seats offer all occupants a command-of-the-road seating position, comfort and support. The seats are trimmed in green leather and Goretex with "G Force Green" soft touch grommets. The rear buckets fold to create a flat loading surface, executed in low-gloss stainless steel with integrated tie-downs in the side trim. True to its Jeep heritage, the interior features a moulded rubber floor.

John Sgalia, Director of Jeep Design A Jeep concept car "ride and drive" event provided Allpar with a chance to not only get a close look at recent Jeep concepts, but also to drive selected vehicles from the recent past. The 1997 Icon, for example, was designed to be the ideal of the next-generation Jeep, more efficiently sized: smaller but instantly recognizable as a Jeep, with the roll bar integrated into the design. If fuel economy became more important, the Icon could point to a downsized Jeep style. Jeep Rescue logo The 2004 Jeep Rescue is a Ram-based Jeep which takes the brand to a whole new size, while increasing its ability to "go anywhere but carry people out" (Sgalia). It's all steel, with front and rear sunroofs, and has a topographical navigation system along with various technologies (including heat sensors) to find people lost in the mountains. Turning the key brings up a loud, clattering diesel that clearly has tons of power (rumor has it that particular engine is more powerful than standard Cummins turbodiesels), despite the various limiters built into concept cars to make sure journalists don't destroy them. The gearshift is hard to operate, requiring good slams to get into gear, and some skill or experience to find the right gears; and it's limited to third.

Inside Line: Driving Jeep Concepts -
With the Compass, Jeep has basically taken the functional versatility of the Liberty's design and honed it into an overall package that could be potentially even more accessible to mainstream car buyers. While only so much can be learned of a car's performance in the limited confines of a parking lot, the Jeep Compass still gave the impression of being hardy enough to justify its brand name, but with an added flexibility. After a couple of laps in both the squat Jeepster and unwieldy Jeep Rescue, which were also on hand for this event, the Jeep Gladiator seems like the most natural model progression of any of the Jeep concepts of recent memory.

But all it really did was force consumers to launch their lunches in a very projectile fashion as they headed for the hills - without the Jeep suppository. Its sporty and sleek exterior may have seemed fairly Orwellian to engineers in 1991, but hello? Where's the "traditional" Jeep? Sure, it did show some forward thinking, including room for six passengers (with an optional 2 plus 2 plus 2 configuration), an entertainment system with a TV and VCR, solar panels that would activate an air-evacuation system to cool the interior, and a tailgate with removable stadium seats. And no long-travel, extreme Jeep should be without an exoskeletal roof rack - with built-in driving lights, apparently. There was also a canvas sunroof that slid back to open up the entire vehicle - perfect for the 12-foot bugs sure to be a part of the new lands the Casablanca would see. As part of the Helen Keller Signature Series of Jeep concepts, the Treo (which means "three" in multiple languages - just like "freakish, frightening, bite-size piece of machinery" does) is proof that sometimes designers will call just about anything with a seven-slot grille a Jeep. Bolt-on fenders, oversized towhooks, "tapered tail," "spar wings," and "fluid imagination" were among the things that made Jeep proud of this aggressively unattractive compact vehicle.

Benefits Of A Jeep Concept Car
Sometimes these cars are also used to get feedback from laymen on a new design. Depending on the response from prospective customers the company decides whether to implement the new changes or not. Jeep concept cars are also a great way to get the designers thinking from a new perspective. Often concept cars are designed to test just one specific aspect of the car. It could even be something as simple as the color of the vehicle or its interiors. The reactions of the public are assessed to decide whether the change is positive or negative. Many manufacturers make concept cars that cannot be driven but are just life scale models that can be studied.
