news: Chrysler launching diesel Jeep Liberty, allowing B5 ...
DaimlerChrysler said its Dodge Ram diesel pickup trucks have run successfully on B20 (20% biodiesel) blends in fleets required to use alternative fuels by the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPACT). However, due to lack of biodiesel fuel standards to guarantee consistent quality of B20 fuels, DaimlerChrysler recommends its diesel vehicles be run on a biodiesel blend of maximum 5% (B5).
2006 Jeep Liberty Diesel
The Jeep Liberty is unique in the world of midsize SUV's in it's rated capacity to pull a heavy load. Its 5,000 pound tow rating (when properly equipped) is well within the weight of most family runabouts and ski boats. One of the really cool things about the Jeep Liberty is how you can customize it right from the dealer. There is a wealth of options and additions that you can add that can liberate your Liberty from the look of others. Overall, the Jeep Liberty diesel offers a real solution for folks that don't want a huge SUV or pickup but have a boat they want to tow. It is comfortable, very stylish in the Jeep kind of thing, and offers the torque of a V8, the performance of a V6 and the mileage of a four cyclinder. Now the only question remaining is how much.

USATODAY.com - Liberty CRD is for diesel lovers
The Jeep diesel officially is called the Liberty CRD (not an acronym for "crud" as diesel-haters might suppose, rather a reference to "common-rail diesel," an oft-used modern designation designed to avoid the word "diesel" and the mainly false smelly, sooty connotations it carries among some potential buyers). On the highway, where horsepower usually is more important than torque, the diesel is only adequate at merging and other high-speed chores. But from standstill to, say, 30 mph, the Liberty diesel pulls like a small locomotive. Standard on the diesel are Jeep's Selec-Trac 4x4 system. It's a dandy. You can leave it in two-wheel drive. You can put it into full-time four-wheel drive - set and forget, and have 4x4 traction instantly when you need it. You can put it into part-time 4x4, which locks up the system so that it sends power to both ends, regardless. That's for really tough going.
Wired News: Hybrid Could Fill Humvee's Boots
The vehicle is powered by a small, three-cylinder diesel engine and two hybrid motors. It would cost about $20,000 to manufacture and could replace a $65,000 Humvee, Almand said. The vehicles are expected to get about 50 miles per gallon, compared to the Humvee's current 11 mpg. The Army produced the easy-to-repair Jeep and Humvees that became successful commercial vehicles, Kahn said. An easily maintained hybrid that, unlike the Toyota Prius, would not require specially trained mechanics might further interest in hybrids, according to Kahn.
