Archive Willys Overland and Ford Jeep Serial Number Page
L-Head engine is one of the main reasons why Willys won the contract with the War Department beating out the Bantam BRC40 and the Ford GP. The Willys GO Devil engine out-performed the engines used in the Ford and Bantam prototype jeeps. The L-Head engines uses a cast iron block and cylinder head with 3 main bearings and mechanical lifters. The engine is called an L-Head is because the valves for the intake and exhaust are in the block. (Most engines have the valves in the head). This design gave Willys the advantage of having a relatively lower profile than other engines. Serial #'s shown in red are based solely on surviving data plates, and not from company records. This chart indicates the highest known serial number at years end. Ford numbered their jeeps based on the serial number of the engine that was installed in them. This boss or pad is stamped with the serial number as "M B # # # # # #" (always 6 digits total after the MB). The Willys engine serial numbers do NOT match the jeep's data plate serial numbers nor the frame serial numbers, even if it is the original factory installed engine that is still in the vehicle. This is because Willys engines were taken out of the production line as needed and put into portable power generators, searchlight units, and welders.

The 10 Mods Every Jeep Needs - 4Wheel and Off-Road
There are two reasons to swap transmissions. Your engine is too powerful for whatever you have or to get a better selection of gearing. When selecting a transmission, pay close attention to rear driveshaft length. By the time you add up the length of the new transmission and the adapter to mate it to the transfer case, you may only have room for a 10-inch driveshaft. Spend some time under your Jeep with a tape measurer before you head to the junkyard. A spring-over axle suspension conversion takes your axles that are slung between the leaf springs and frame and moves them under the springs. This requires relocating the spring perches on the axletube, relocating the shock mounts, fixing the steering interference issues, and finding a way to deal with the axlewrap that almost always results. You end up with more than 5 inches of lift; more flex, and better ground clearance. It's the only way to go if you own a Jeep and plan to run 35-inch-or-taller tires. Leaf-spring suspensions are relatively simple, but make sure to double-check your work before you cut anything off or weld anything on.
Jeep V-8 Power! -- Off Road Magazine
Say you have a CJ with a healthy Jeep V-8 for playing in the sand dunes or doing the rocks. Can there be any improvement to such a potent combination? Yes. Such was the case with Dave Zelinka's bright-yellow '79 CJ-7. The Jeep's mildly modified AMC 304 had reliably served the CJ, but Dave was ready for something with a bit more performance. After the decision was made to go with a small-block Chevy transplant, the rest was easy. The engine would be stroked and modified as needed, and a multipoint fuel-injection system would ride atop the lifter valley. The goals were to install an engine setup that would provide smooth operation from idle up to about 4,500 rpm. Low-end torque for slow-speed crawling was more important than all-out high-end horsepower. The mid-band power, however, had to remain plenty strong for sustained street and dune driving.
Jeep engine parts
This is the best header on the market today for your Jeep. Built extremely tough with corrosion resistant coating and a lifetime warranty. A great looking header that will give your Jeep's engine a serious POWER boost. The Large Tri-Y design really maximizes free-flowing exhaust. All Thorley headers are 50-state smog legal. This is very important as many headers do not have this certificate and will not pass emissions tests.
Jeep Tech Engines
Does it seem you have to push too hard while starting off, only to have the engine rev too fast and cause a jerky take off? Wouldn't it be nice to have a feather-smooth throttle? Having jerky throttle response is bad enough for day to day street driving, but is downright dangerous on the trail.
Car Talk
If you open the hood with the engine running, you should be able to feel around the hoses that feed all of these systems and determine which one of them is cracked. The cracked hose will be hissing, and that hissing sound will change when you cover the crack with your hand. You should also be able to feel the suction.
