2005 Concept Roundup
Click to enlarge. Jeep Gladiator There are few things that represent off road quite like a Wrangler. The scaled back tough-guy look and the history have worked its way into a permanent slot in American car culture. It's a fact - when you think of off road, chances are the first vehicle you think of is a Jeep Wrangler - with apologies to Land Rover. Shoot. They drove these things in World War II - mess with America's off road favorite, and invite disaster, and the Gladiator concept -which debuted at the 2005 North American International Auto Show sure does mess with it. For the most part, however, it does so with the right touch of style and toughness, though it sure is tough to look at the Wrangler as a truck. Then again, that's not true for everyone. The Gladiator takes much of its design - and its name -from the 1962 full size pickup. Another concept that might have one foot in the production window from Chrysler, the Gladiator is a sharp-looking vehicle that defies label, as it retains much of the Wrangler mechanics but includes fancy chrome accents and a bed that can expand to 8 feet in a 'classic'pull-the-back-window-out Avalanche-esqe mechanical design.

On the interior, Gladiator is thoroughly contemporary with a utility theme. The color palate includes Armour Green with Dark Slate Gray accents. The seats are weatherproof and the interior is designed for hose-out ease of care. Not surprisingly, Gladiator features all the necessary technology for finding the way there and back including GPS, a navigation system and a communications system. "This vehicle blends classic cues with contemporary functionality and innovation," said Creed.

The Gladiator uses a four-link suspension with coils in front and a five-link in the rear. Control arms are similar in design, though not appearance, to the current Wranglers and are longer to accomodate the longer wheelbase of the truck. The Gladiator features an expandable bed. The standard setup is a 5' 8" long bed. Following trends set by other vehicles on the market, it also features an expandable midgate, which allows the bed length to increase to 6' 8".

4Car Feature - Jeep Hurricane & Gladiator - from Channel 4
Design chief Trevor Creed says that "Jeep Hurricane is simply the most manoeuvreable, most capable and most powerful 4x4 ever built. It pays homage to the extreme enthusiasts' Jeep vehicles in form and off-road capability, but is a unique interpretation of Jeep design. The Gladiator has removable doors, a fold-down windshield, canvas roof and plenty of storage compartments, plus an extendable pick-up load bay which can carry loads up to 2723mm long with the tailgate down and midgate - barrier between load bed and passenger compartment - lowered.
Jeep Gladiator Concept - Jp Magazine
Jeep unveiled its Gladiator concept pickup at the Detroit auto show, bringing to light what many enthusiasts hope is a indication of things to come from the brand. In addition to having unmistakable classic Jeep styling, strongly influenced by the Wrangler and CJs of the past, the truck is equipped with all the requisite hardware that Jeep enthusiasts look for. From a functional standpoint, the Gladiator strikes a balance between off-road capability, and brute workhorse capacity, offering a 1,500-pound payload capacity, while retaining coil springs at all four corners, unusual for a pickup truck. Will the Gladiator ever leave the glow of convention-center lights for the light of day? DaimlerChrysler officials are staying mum about the possibility, but seeing that most of the hardware on the concept is off-the-shelf stuff from the corporate parts bin, and nothing on the vehicle looks particularly outlandish or impractical, the chances are as good as any. And of the big three, DCX traditionally has one of the best track records of putting concepts on the showroom floor.
