Flint Trail - Green River jeep road, Canyonlands National Park
Under the Ledge is a term local cowboys once used to identify the canyon country east of the Orange Cliffs in Canyonlands National Park. The area has subsequently been renamed the Maze District, but this jeep ride will clearly demonstrate how appropriate the older term was. From Hans Flat Ranger Station the road heads south along the top of the mesa, occasionally approaching the edge of the rim for dramatic views into the canyons below. Once below the rim the road turns north to meander across a series of canyons and benches for the next 41 miles before finally ending at the Green River near the mouth of Millard Canyon. Most of the route is through dry, barren desert country, but the canyons and the buttes provide panoramas that are often breathtaking. The Flint Trail existed as a cow trail for most of the last century, but it was only in the early 1950s that it was improved enough for wheeled vehicle use. This road, like most of the other jeep trails in Canyonlands was constructed by uranium prospectors during the post-war uranium boom, and it is still the only place where it is possible to drive a car from the top of the Orange Cliffs down into the Maze. The road drops 800 feet in the first mile and then levels out slightly as it enters an area called Flint Cove at the head of Big Water Canyon.

Jeep Rims: Car Rims in Different Sizes and Styles for Optimum Jeep ...
For an improved handling, exquisite drive or simply for your Jeep's outstanding looks, get only top of the line Jeep Rims and wheel accessories. Jeep Rims are available in a variety of styles, materials, finishes and sizes. Today, most wheels are made of steel, cast aluminum or billet aluminum. Some rims come bare, painted, clear-coated, polished or chromed. Getting the right Jeep Rims is an integral part of driving a high performance Jeep Cherokee or Jeep Wrangler. Jeep Rims can either be alloy or steel. Steel rims are more resilient to damage, and are considerably cheaper to fit. Alloy wheels are usually wheels 'cast' from a mixture of aluminum, which is lightweight and great at dissipating heat and small amounts of more rigid metals. Jeep alloy rims are lighter, more attractive, and better at dissipating brake heat that their steel counterparts. Jeep Rims whether it is Grand Cherokee Jeep Rim or Jeep Wrangler Rim which are made of alloy normally reduces your vehicle's unsprung weight which means a reduction in rotating mass at the end of your suspension components, giving you improved steering feel and greater braking response. This will help prevent the road salt, brake dust and dirt 'keying' to the surface on first use. Be sure to treat the surface of your alloys as well, if not better, than you would your paintwork. Remember, you've spent a small fortune of your wheels and they're going to be subject to the harshest conditions of just about any part your Jeep especially when you take it to the great outdoors. Never use abrasive cleansers, electric buffers or wire wool pads on your wheels. Bear in mind that the best way to keep Jeep Rims clean is frequent washing with mildly soapy warm water letting loose abrasive grit off first.

Jeep Tech: Wheels
This is the total wheel diameter when measured from bead seat to bead seat. When replacing tires you of course must know the wheel diameter, but this will be stamped on the old tires. If you are browsing through a stack of wheels that are not stamped an easy way to determine the diameter is to measure the maximum diameter from rim to rim and then with a ruler measure the distance from the rim down to the bead seat. Subtract twice the distance which you measured down to the bead seat from the rim to rim diameter and you will have the correct wheel diameter. Wheel diameter is a critical consideration when changing or altering brake components. Rim width relative to tread width has an effect on bead retention when aired down and on the overall tire profile. In general a narrower wheel (from within the manufacturers guidelines) will result in a more rounded profile with a slightly smaller footprint but with slightly greater protection of the wheel. Narrower wheels also may retain the bead marginally better when aired down than will the wider wheels. Wider wheel provide a flatter tire profile and greater footprint. Since the rim is wider it will not be as protected from the rocks as would a narrower wheel with the same tire. The tire carcass will exert less pressure on the wider width bead when aired down and a wider wheel may thus be marginally more likely to lose a bead when pressures are low. Backspacing is the distance from the inside rim surface to the backside of the wheel mounting surface. It determines how far a wheel (& tire) sticks into or out of the wheel well of the vehicle. Wheels with a lot of backspacing will stick further in. Wheels with little back spacing will stick further out. Sometimes when swapping in wider axles 4x4 owners will switch to a wheel with much more backspacing to compensate. You should note that the backspacing measurement is critical when considering the wheels clearance of the suspension, braking and steering components as well as the body.
