Outdoor Recreation Network - Making It All Fit
The most successful off-road trailers are probably actual Jeep trailers that were made for the military. The three best known versions are the MBT, made by Bantam in WW II; the M-100 after 1950; and M-416, in use during the Viet Nam War and towed behind the Jeeps of the era. All three styles were metal, including a parking brake and pintle hook, with wheels, tires, and track to match the jeep. These were not lightweight, but were bulletproof and could stand up to abuse. The former plethora of salvaged trailers at auction has ended, and they are getting harder to find. Expect to pay $300-800 for a good one.

Tugger The Movie
TUGGER is the inspiring tale of a Jeep 4x4 , who, after being injured while serving his country during World War II, has his engine fan replaced by a real airplane propeller. From that day on, TUGGER is convinced that his destiny is to one day fly like a real airplane. After being sold as war surplus, Tugger spends his time towing airplanes at a local airfield, where he's always in trouble with the Tower Chief and his crazy dog, Max.

Simon has completed some interesting restorations over the years including the unusual jeep trailer (opposite). It was rescued from a farm in the Southampton area and identified by the Imperial War Museum in London as a WW2 Seabees trailer. As the photograph shows it is basically a modified Willys trailer which had the original body replaced by a stronger and slightly larger one with a drop tail gate.

It is known that by 1943 this trailer was being produced by both American Bantam and Willys Overland. It is not known for sure who did the initial design work on the trailer, but most people credit Willys Overland. The Bantam model number was BT3 or Bantam Trailer - 3 (also called T3), while Willys used MBT or MB Trailer. The BT3 and MBT trailers consisted of a sheet metal construction cargo body welded to a separate frame. When the two floor drain plugs were sealed shut, the trailer became amphibious and could be either motored or man-handled across rivers or bodies of water. The trailer's single axle was supported by conventional leaf springs and direct acting shock absorbers. Towing was accomplished by means of a lunette receiver hitch used in conjunction with the military pintle hook that was mounted on the rear of most military vehicles of the time period. The trailer could be parked in a near level position by simply dropping its "landing leg" located just behind the lunette.

Mark's Mail Jeep
What matters, is not the weight of the vehicle but the relative weights of the vehicle and trailer (both actual weight and tongue weight), the type of hitch, and the vehicles handling charcteristics. The jeeps high center of gravity and short narrow wheelbase will tend to amplify the effects of forces applied to the hitch by the trailer compared to other towing vehicles of the same weight. The drum brakes which tend to pull to one side don't help either.

The History Buff, Original Historical Autographs & Manuscripts
Jeep trailer photo taken June 16, 1945. The photo shows a jeep trailer loaded with packages and was taken June 16, 1945 to document the production of a record number of charts within a 24 hour period. The packages of charts on the left in the trailer are for both conventional and radar bomb sights. The circular images on the charts indicate the way in which the target would appear in a radar bomb sight at various distances and specified flight path. These radar bomb sight images were presented in various shades of gray and black on white map stock.
