4Car Feature - Obscure off-roaders - from Channel 4
When it first appeared, the Wagoneer - the world's first luxury off-roader - was extremely odd. A massive five-seater styled by Brook Stevens, with a huge luggage deck and generous ground clearance its styling looked more station-wagon than utilitarian off-roader. This was indeed a four-wheel drive that was just as happy cruising the interstate as it was bumping through the wilderness. Options like power-assisted steering and automatic transmission were unheard of in off-roaders until then, and with the 250bhp V8 fitted, the Wagoneer was no slouch either with a top speed of 106mph. The base power plant offered was a straight-six unit - quick enough too. With no real competition (the Range Rover was still a decade away) the Wagoneer had the market almost to itself, which was probably why its design changed so little and lasted well into the '70s, gaining more luxury and bizarre grained wooden side panel trims along the way.
