Jeep Wrangler: Information From Answers.com
The Jeep YJ (sometimes referred to with the backronym, "Yukon Jeep"), sold as the Wrangler, replaced the much-loved but slower-selling Jeep CJ in 1986. It was a new design with a longer wheelbase, less ground clearance, and more comfort, and some of its inspiration came from its stable mate, the Jeep Cherokee, rather than from its CJ predecessor alone. 632,231 YJs were built through model year 1995. The YJ was replaced in 1996 by 1997's TJ.

As with any new vehicle, there are occasional problems. That said, Jeep really seems to have done their homework with the new model. There haven't been a lot of common problems that large numbers of people are reporting. This is one area where you can have it both ways - but you have to pay a little more money. The soft top comes with either the half doors or the full-height doors with real glass windows. The hard top comes with the full-height doors. If you get a hard top, it can be installed while the soft top is installed and folded down. If you buy your Jeep with the soft top, you can get a hard top later on. This can be fairly expensive (at least $1500), but at least there's now a variety of companies other than Mopar producing hard tops. Don't let anyone talk you into doing a trail, or a section on the trail, that you don't feel comfortable doing. You don't have to worry about being a wimp because you can't handle some obstacle that beefed-up Jeeps or other 4x4's are taking. That ability comes with experience. Also, if someone gives you a hard time about it, remind them that it's your Jeep and that you're making the payments on it, not them.

Super Swamper SSRs on bead-locked Marsh Racing 15x9 steel wheels. Once the Wrangler was up and running around, it was time to outfit it with all the trail necessities. A Currie front and rear bumper, Hanson Enterprises rocker guards, and steel rear corners all help to protect the Jeep's vulnerable spots. A Ramsey Pro Plus 9000 winch juiced by a twin Optima battery system is used to extract the YJ from sticky situations. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the front axle. Sunray Engineering modified a Ford 9-inch to use Dana 60 outer tubes, knuckles, and hubs. This gives the Jeep better ground clearance than with a Dana 60. Rob fitted a GM steering column to the YJ (but topped it with the Jeep steering wheel for a sneaky look). He engages the lockers with industrial air valves (not electric switches) mounted just below the speedo. The seats and top are from Bestop. He also welded the stock clutch pedal to the brake pedal.
