The Liberty has independent front suspension and a modern rack-and-pinion steering setup for more precise handling on and off road, but the ride is still jittery. The cockpit is narrow, and access is awkward. The diesel version is slow and noisy and gets only 18 mpg overall.

Bolted flares are also molded-in color for more durability and feature chrome-plated attachment details. A new luggage side rack with beefier molded-in color structural end pieces and a Brushed Silver Metallic tubular side rail enhances the Renegades rugged appearance. Test Drive Notes: 2002 Jeep Liberty
The 2002 model Liberty is Jeep's new, smaller sport utility vehicle and is being introduced as the eventual replacement for the old barbaric Cherokee. Jeep will keep selling the Cherokee for another year or so, or as long as people are willing to buy it. The Liberty is slightly larger and more rugged than other SUVs built on car platforms, such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Its true competitors are vehicles like the Ford Escape, Mazda Tribute, the new Land Rover Freelander, and Nissan Xterra. The Liberty is actually built for off-road travel, which is, after all, what people expect from Jeep. Styling is a strong point. The first thing you'll notice is the front end, with its round, cool retro headlights and seven-bar grille echoing the earliest Jeeps - you know, the ones that came with serial numbers stenciled on the side of the hood. In fact, the Liberty has a lot of that classic Jeep look - retro and rugged. It's taller and less long than it appears in photographs. Jeep did a nice job with the Liberty. It's a great looking, nice driving, useful, and compact SUV. And if you really need, or want, off-road capability, the Liberty is a very nice vehicle. It's a definite improvement on previous Jeeps in the ride and handling department.

Jeep Liberty description and information
The history of the Jeep Cherokee reflects the vision and leadership of Chrysler Corporation. The original Grand Cherokee was meant to replace the Cherokee, but it was considerably larger and more expensive when it finally hit production - and the market for the new Cherokee was different than the market for the old one. Chrysler, the new owner of AMC, decided to sell both, and, in their tradition of having one name for two products and two names for the same product, kept the Cherokee name for both - except that the new one was the Grand Cherokee. Jeep Liberty features several braking system enhancements to deliver even more safety, durability and performance. Since heat is one of the biggest contributors to premature brake wear and loss of braking effectiveness, Liberty brakes were heat-tested in the parched desert of Death Valley, California, and in the grueling stop-and-go rush-hour traffic of Los Angeles. Major improvements over previous brake systems include larger, more robust rotors and drums and greater cooling capacity. Driver and passenger front air bags are designed to activate at different levels, depending on the severity of an impact and whether the occupant is buckled in. Liberty is the first Jeep with available side air bag curtains.
